Android will automatically archive unused apps, just like the iPhone

Google has announced an auto-archive feature for rarely used apps on Android. It will free up space on user’s device without the need to completely uninstall applications.

This feature is well known to iOS users. If your device is low on storage, rarely used apps will be offloaded to the cloud, saving up to 60% of space. At the same time, user's data remains on the device and will be restored when the application is reloaded.

Users can opt into auto-archive in a few steps:

1. The user tries to install a new app when the device is out of storage.
2. A pop-up window appears asking if the user wants to enable auto-archive.
3. If the user opts in, unused apps on the user's device will be auto-archived to free up enough space for a new app request.

The AutoArchive feature will be part of one of the updates to the Google Play app.
