Figma updates the Crop tool: how the new features simplify image editing
Figma continues to refine its core tools, making everyday design tasks faster and more intuitive. In one of its latest updates, the Crop tool received several improvements. While the update may seem minor at first glance, it has a noticeable impact on image editing workflows.
Faster access to Crop mode
Entering crop mode is now as simple as double-clicking on an image. This removes the need to manually select the tool from the panel and speeds up routine editing tasks.
Automatic aspect ratio and free scaling
The updated Crop tool automatically preserves image proportions, which is especially helpful when working with standard formats. When free scaling is needed, holding Ctrl / ⌘ allows users to resize images without any constraints.
Preset aspect ratios
Figma now includes a set of common aspect ratios:
1:1, 16:9, 3:4, 2:3, 9:16.
This makes it easier to adapt images for different platforms and layouts without manual adjustments.
Snap to edges and Resize to fit
The Snap to edges feature helps align images precisely within frames, while Resize to fit allows quick resizing to match the frame size. These options are especially useful when working with grids and UI components.
Dedicated Crop toolbar
All crop-related settings are now available in a separate Crop toolbar. This keeps controls organized and makes the tool more intuitive to use.
