Google is Trying to Combat "Deep Fakes" by Marking AI Images
Google is launching an "About This Image" feature that will flag images generated by artificial intelligence to reduce misinformation and fakes. It applies, in particular, to Midjourney and Shutterstock.
Google users will now be able to determine the original source of the image: there will be a corresponding note on the files generated by artificial intelligence. Moreover, Google is actively collaborating with various platforms to ensure the seamless integration of this feature across multiple online services.
You can also use the "About this image" function to find out when the image was first indexed by Google, where it first appeared online and, finally, where it has appeared in other places like social media, news sites, or even fact-checking sites.
The feature will start working in the "coming months". There is no specific date at the moment, but it is known that it will work in the US first.
To use the new feature, users will need to tap the three dots on an image in Google Images search results, search by image or screenshot in Google Lens, or swipe up in the Google app.
