OpenAI is launching group chats in ChatGPT

OpenAI has launched a pilot for group chats in ChatGPT, letting multiple people talk and collaborate with AI in one conversation. The feature will roll out to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Group chats are designed for planning and decision-making — from choosing a restaurant or trip planning to discussing interior design or study projects. ChatGPT can assist everyone at once by comparing options, organizing information, creating lists, and offering recommendations.

Group chats are separate from private conversations — ChatGPT’s personal memory isn’t shared. To start a group, tap the people icon in the top-right corner and invite up to 20 participants via link. New users can set up a short profile with a name, nickname, and photo. All group chats appear in a dedicated sidebar section.

The model now has new “social” skills: knowing when to respond, reacting with emojis, and referencing profile photos. Settings allow you to manage participants, notifications, and ChatGPT instructions.

OpenAI calls group chats the first step toward a more collective, interactive ChatGPT experience and plans to expand the feature based on early feedback.
