The Figma launched 3 new AI image editing tools, all centralized in a contextual toolbar.Expand image
Expand image
Previously, adapting a hero image from desktop to mobile, or adjusting product photos for social media formats, required the Crop tool to manually reframe the image for a different aspect ratio. Now, Expand Image automatically extends the image background so it fits new dimensions without distortion - preserving the original composition while making it easy to adapt to any layout.
For example, when creating marketing materials, you can transform a 1:1 square image into a full web banner, giving space for text without losing the visual context.
Isolate object
Many modern AI-powered creative image tools, like Nano Banana, can interpret visual prompts and generate realistic visuals that align with your brand identity. Yet, even as these tools continue to evolve, designers still rely on precise controls to edit and refine the results. Now, you can select any object within an image and use Erase Object to remove it completely, or Isolate Object to reposition or edit it - without affecting the background. You can also take an individual object or a person and adjust its lighting, color, or focus.
For example, if you’re working with a product photo, you can brighten key elements and mute the surrounding details, or remove distracting components to make your product stand out. You can also apply effects such as blur, color correction, or shadows to any selected object.
Erase object
Designers often receive logos or product images from various sources and in many different formats. The ability to remove a background and then adjust the color or style to achieve a consistent look - whether for marketing materials or UI mockups - is essential for maintaining visual coherence at scale. This is why background removal is one of the most frequently used AI actions in Figma.
In fact, seeing how heavily designers rely on this feature is what inspired us to expand our image-editing toolkit. Today, we’re making Remove Background more prominent by placing it directly within the new image editing toolbar.
