TikTok introduces voice notes and photo sharing in DMs

TikTok is expanding its messaging tools, allowing users to send voice recordings and share up to nine images or videos within one-on-one or group chats, the company told TechCrunch.

The voice note feature lets users record and send audio clips of up to 60 seconds. This addition brings TikTok in line with competitors such as WhatsApp and Instagram, which already support audio messaging. The feature will gradually roll out over the coming weeks.

When sharing photos or videos, people can either snap something new with their camera or choose an existing file from their gallery, with the option to make edits before sending it. To maintain safety, TikTok restricts first-time messages from including personal photos or videos—new contacts are limited to sharing content already available on the platform. Additionally, the app provides reminders encouraging users to think about their privacy before sending personal media.

TikTok enforces additional protections for younger users: direct messages are disabled for anyone under 16, and for users aged 16 to 18, the platform’s automated systems prevent the exchange of nude images. If detected, the sender is blocked from sharing it, and the recipient never receives it. Adults over 18 can toggle this filter on or off in their settings.

The company frames these updates as new ways for people to connect and express themselves, reflecting habits they already use elsewhere.
