Reports continue to surface that Google is developing a new PC operating system built on Android and elements of Chrome OS. Executives from both Google and Qualcomm have previously mentioned the project, calling it promising and “amazing.” Now more concrete details have emerged, including its internal name – Aluminium OS, according to Android Authority.

The name appeared in a new Google job listing for a Senior Product Manager for Android, laptops, and tablets. The description states that the role involves “designing a new Android-based operating system called Aluminium.”

Aluminium OS is described as an AI-centric system, aligning with Google’s ambition to integrate Gemini and other models more deeply into its products. The OS is expected to run not only on PCs but also on a wide range of devices, from laptops and tablets to various mini-PCs.

According to early information, Aluminium OS is planned for release in 2026 and will be based on Android 17. Google does not intend to immediately phase out Chrome OS – both systems will operate in parallel for some time. As for consumer branding, nothing is final yet: although the internal name is Aluminium, the system may still launch under the well-known Chrome OS name.
