Instagram adds nicknames and live location sharing to direct messages
Instagram notes that currently, location sharing will be available only in select countries.
Instagram has introduced several new features, including the ability to share live geolocation in direct messages and add nicknames for users.
Live location sharing
Users can share their current location with friends and family for up to one hour in private chats, both one-on-one and in group conversations. The location can also be pinned on a map to help coordinate meetings more easily.
The geolocation feature will be disabled by default. Users will see an indicator reminding them that they share their live location, with the option to disable this feature at any time.
Only users in the current chat can see the location of the user, and this information can't be forwarded with other chats.
Instagram also notes that currently, live location sharing will be available only in select countries.
Nicknames for users
Instagram is also adding the ability to assign nicknames to friends in direct messages to make chats more personal.
Users can create nicknames for themselves and their friends, shortening long usernames for easier recognition.
Users can also allow other users to edit their nickname, or restrict it, so only the account owner can edit it.
To create a nickname in the chats, users just need to click on the chat name at the top of the conversation, and then click on "Nicknames".
Instagram has also added 17 sticker packs with 300 new stickers that can be used in direct messages, and the ability to add stickers to favorites.
