Android may receive a new feature, "Desktop Mode", which allows users to turn their smartphones into fully functional computers when connected to a monitor. This feature enables users to work with applications, windows, and the taskbar just like a laptop or desktop computer.

Desktop Mode was shown by journalist and Android expert Mishaal Rahman, who shared it with the Android Authority. Rahman enabled Android Desktop Mode in the developer settings on his Google Pixel 8 Pro, running the latest Android 16 beta version.

Externally and functionally, the Desktop mode in Android is similar to Samsung DeX, which allows Galaxy device owners to use their smartphone as a computer when connected to an external display.

Android Desktop mode places the Android status bar at the top with time, network status, and other important information. At the bottom of the screen, there is a taskbar where users can pin their favorite applications or access a list of all installed programs. They can also easily switch between recently used programs and applications.

According to Rahman, the Desktop Mode may not be included in the official release of Android 16 this spring. However, the feature could be added in a future update.
