VLC Player presents automatic subtitle generation for videos
AI-powered subtitles were created as a plugin using OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition technology, but they are now integrated directly into the VLC software.
VLC Player will be able to automatically generate subtitles for videos using artificial intelligence, even without an internet connection.
The VideoLAN organization shared a video at CES 2025 demonstrating a new feature that utilizes open-source AI models to generate subtitles in multiple languages for videos.
VideoLAN President Jean-Baptiste Kempf says, that the video player will support up to 100 different languages and "What’s important is that this is running on the machine locally, offline, without any cloud services. It runs directly inside the executable.”
