Apple Presentation 2024 | "Time to shine" and iPhone 16
Highlighting the most interesting aspects from Apple’s latest 2024 presentation.
Apple held a presentation today called "Time to Shine," during which they introduced the new iPhone 16 lineup and more.
Apple Watch Series 10
The Apple Watch Series 10 features larger screens and thinner cases.
- The screen is covered with IonX protective glass and is 40% brighter. The company refers to this display as Wide Angle OLED.
- The Series 10 also sports updated cases made of polished aluminum.
- These are now the "thinnest Apple Watches," achieved through miniaturization of the speaker and navigation wheel.
- The watches will charge faster, reaching 80% charge in just 30 minutes.
- In addition to the polished aluminum, the Series 10 will offer a polished titanium version.
- The watches run on the Apple Silicon S10 processor, which provides faster neural processing for gesture detection, fall detection, and background noise suppression during voice input.
- The watches will be able to measure dive depth and water temperature, making them suitable for divers with a 50-meter water resistance rating.
- The price of the Apple Watch Series 10 in the U.S. starts at $399.
Apple Watch Ultra
The Apple Watch Ultra will also receive an update.
- With WatchOS 11, it will support offline maps.
- The watch will feature several new software enhancements, workout modes, and watch faces.
- A new titanium band with a more durable and long-lasting clasp will be available.
- The price of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the new color remains at $799.
AirPods 4 in two versions
- The AirPods have a new, "more anatomical" and comfortable shape. Inside, there's a new H2 chip.
- There are two models, one of which offers active noise cancellation. There’s also a transparency mode to hear surrounding sounds, and conversation detection will lower the volume when you start speaking. The case for these more advanced AirPods 4 will include wireless charging.
- The H2 chip now allows gestures in the AirPods 4 to accept or decline calls—nodding to accept and shaking to decline.
- The AirPods 4 will feature a new case with a larger battery and active noise cancellation.
- Functions previously exclusive to the "Pro" model, such as transparency mode, adaptive audio, and conversation mode (which automatically reduces noise cancellation when detecting a conversation), will now be available in the AirPods 4.
- The AirPods Pro will include a built-in hearing test feature, a 5-minute test that can be done using an iPhone, with the data stored in Apple Health. The earbuds will also gain a certified medical hearing assistance function.
- The AirPods 4 will cost $129, and the model with active noise cancellation will be $179.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus
- The new Ceramic Shield material for the screen is 50% stronger. The screen sizes remain the same—6.1 inches for the iPhone 16 and 6.7 inches for the iPhone 16 Plus.
- The Action Button now appears on these models. Screen brightness can range from 1 to 2000 nits.
- The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will feature the Action Button like the previous year’s iPhone 15 Pro, as well as a camera shutter button.
- To support Apple Intelligence, the iPhone 16 will use a new 3-nanometer Apple A18 chip and increased RAM. This 6-core processor is claimed to be 30% faster than the A16.
- Apple Intelligence will connect to other AI models, such as ChatGPT, through a secure Privat Cloud channel.
- Additionally, iPhone 16 will offer AI-generated images and simple image and video searches.
- Apple Intelligence will prioritize notifications automatically, and Siri will better understand plain language and text queries.
- The iPhone 16 will also have Visual Intelligence, allowing users to point the camera at an image to quickly search for information about a place or object. Visual Intelligence can be used for product searches via Google.
- A simple press on the camera interface will open a zoom function, adjustable with a slide.
- The iPhone 16 will feature a 48-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The 48-megapixel main camera can function as a 2x telephoto lens, and the 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens can capture macro shots. Apple claims this setup provides four cameras in one device.
- With the A18 processor, the iPhone 16 offers improved gaming performance, with 30% better performance.
- Both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will have larger batteries, although details on battery life are not provided.
- The iPhone 16 will start at $799 in the U.S., and the 16 Plus will start at $899.
iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max
The updated iPhone 16 Pro line will feature thinner bezels, resulting in larger screens while maintaining the same body size.
- The iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch screen, and the 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch screen. The new models are made of 5th-grade titanium.
- The Pro line will be available in four new colors.
- The new body design with an updated thermal system promises better gaming performance and, most importantly, larger batteries.
- The smartphones will feature a slightly faster Apple A18 Pro processor, a 3-nanometer chip with more transistors than the A18, and a 16-core neural co-processor for AI tasks.
- The iPhone 16 Pro will have updated cameras, including a 48-megapixel main camera with an f/1.78 aperture and 100% focus pixels, a new 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 12-megapixel 5x telephoto camera.
- The new camera button will allow switching between video shooting modes with a simple slide.
- The iPhone 16 Pro will feature four "studio-level" microphones, according to Apple, enabling higher quality spatial audio recording.
- Later this year, the Voice Memos app on the iPhone 16 Pro will allow musicians to layer recordings, enabling them to sing over an already recorded guitar track.
- New MagSafe-compatible cases with wireless charging support will be available for the iPhone 16 Pro.
- The iPhone 16 Pro will start at $999 in the U.S., and the 16 Pro Max will start at $1199.
