Meta Platforms has announced that it is testing the use of artificial intelligence on Instagram to determine the age of users.

The AI will detect teen accounts with incorrect birth years and adjust the settings accordingly. If the system determines that the user is underage, even if the year of birth on their account doesn't confirm this, it will automatically apply more strict settings to the account. Teenagers' accounts are automatically closed, which means that private messaging for these accounts is limited. So, teens cannot receive messages from unknown people, and Instagram only shows appropriate content for teen users.

AI system will look for signs that a user is under the age of 18. For example, it will analyze birthday messages, comments from friends, and the type of content that the account interacts with. Instagram recognizes that AI can make mistakes and offers users the opportunity to restore their settings.

This feature was originally announced in 2024 and will start testing in the United States today.
